Natural Riverstone Decorative Pestle & Mortar – Medium

A little piece inspired by a very special memory.

During my travels in Bali, I was lucky enough to spend time cooking with a wonderful couple who welcomed me into their home and shared some of their family traditions with me.

One of the things that stayed with me was the importance of food and the rituals surrounding it. Multigenerational living was simply part of everyday life, and preparing food wasn't something to rush through — it was about family, connection and time spent together.

I watched mortar and pestles being used to grind fresh herbs and fragrant spices by hand, and there was something wonderfully grounding about such a simple, traditional object.

So when I discovered these handmade decorative riverstone pestle and mortars, they immediately took me back to Bali.

This medium version is carved from natural riverstone in Indonesia and measures approximately 12 × 8 cm. Its organic shape and natural texture give it enough presence to stand beautifully on a kitchen shelf, console table or amongst a collection of treasured objects.

The smooth interior contrasts with the raw character of the stone, while natural variations in colour, pattern, shape and texture mean that every piece is individual.

For me, it's more than simply something decorative. It's a reminder of Bali, of slowing down, and of how the people and places we encounter can stay with us long after we've returned home.

Sometimes the simplest objects hold the loveliest memories.
