The Season of Treats, Bonfires and “Not Yet, Christmas”

The Season of Treats, Bonfires and “Not Yet, Christmas”

This week has been unusually busy. Christmas has already been mentioned, and I don’t know about you, but the thought sends a little flicker of anxiety racing through my veins. All those expectations, wrapped up in one shiny package.

And we haven’t even got through Halloween and Bonfire Night yet.

When the children were smaller, we always celebrated both. There were parties, trips around the streets collecting treats, and Bonfire Night with a year’s worth of rubbish piled high, topped with a Guy dressed in last year’s fashion. It was all very exciting — and probably involved more sweets, smoke and cold fingers than any of us really needed.

I thought that as the children got older, I might get to take a breather. And I have, in a way. But there’s a little sadness in it too. My children don’t need me in quite the same way they used to.

The lovely surprise is that the parents we celebrated with are still here. Their children have grown up too, and our friendships have grown along with them. So, as one thing moves on, something else takes root.

This year, there’ll still be festivities, but the children can dip in and out as they please. And, if I’m honest, things are looking a little more grown-up. Fewer sweets scattered everywhere, perhaps. Maybe fewer trips out into the cold. We’ll see how long that lasts.

As for Christmas, I’ve decided I’ll start thinking about that in December.

At least, that’s the plan. Ask me again when someone puts the first mince pie out.

Before you go…

Have any of your family traditions changed over the years? What has grown in their place? I’d love to hear your thoughts. welcome@tenacious-wellness.com
