The Joy in Keeping It Simple

The Joy in Keeping It Simple

As we search for new and inventive ways to entertain our children during the summer holidays, I'd like to share our family's favourite activity.

We fly a kite.

That's it. It really is that simple.

One person throws the kite into the breeze while the other steadies the line, willing it to catch the wind. Once it's soaring overhead, we swap places, each taking turns launching and flying. Hours seem to disappear as we laugh, encourage one another, and celebrate the moments when the kite climbs higher than before.

The wonderful thing about flying a kite is that it never seems to stay just our activity. It has a way of drawing people in. Before long, passers-by stop to watch, children point excitedly towards the sky, and smiles begin to spread. Somehow, one simple splash of colour dancing above our heads creates a little moment of joy for everyone nearby.

We always keep a small pocket kite tucked away in a backpack, ready for those unexpected sunny afternoons. Strangely enough, it's often the simplest kites that fly the best.

Of course, this is my family we're talking about, so before long a competitive streak appears. The kites became bigger, brighter and far more elaborate, each one trying to outdo the last. But despite all that, the feeling never changed. The joy wasn't in having the biggest kite; it was in standing together beneath an open sky, laughing as it caught the wind.

So, if you're wondering what to do on a warm summer's day when there's just enough breeze in the air, pack a kite and head somewhere safe and open. Avoid overhead power lines, large trees and other obstacles, then simply let it fly.

Sometimes the greatest adventures don't need batteries, tickets or expensive equipment. Sometimes all they need is a little wind, an open sky and the willingness to enjoy life's simplest pleasures.

Final Thoughts

As adults, we often spend so much time searching for the next activity, the next day out, or the next thing to keep everyone entertained that we forget some of our happiest memories were made with the simplest of pleasures.

A kite, a gentle breeze and an open field have a wonderful way of slowing us down. They remind us to look up, laugh a little louder and enjoy being together without distractions.

Perhaps that's the real joy of keeping life simple. Not because it's easier, but because it allows us to notice the moments that matter most.

If you decide to dust off an old kite or buy one for the first time, I'd love to hear where the wind takes you.

Happy flying,

Paula xx
