I am so often reminded that it is the small things in life that have the most profound impact.
The saying goes, "It is better to give than to receive," and, in many ways, I believe that to be true. Giving our time, our kindness or our attention to someone else often brings as much joy to us as it does to the person receiving it. But every now and then, we find ourselves on the receiving end of an unexpected act of kindness, and it reminds us just how precious it is to simply accept a gift with gratitude.
A stranger smiles at you on a bleak, wet and windy day.
Someone holds the door open when your hands are full of shopping.
A friend passes on a book they have loved because they want to share the joy it brought them.
These moments are so ordinary that they can easily be overlooked, yet they have the power to brighten a day and remind us that kindness still exists all around us.
The other day, there was a knock at the door. Standing there was a lovely friend holding a box overflowing with home-grown lettuce.
"I thought you might like these," she said.
She and her son had grown them together in their garden, and their shared love of gardening had produced more than enough to share with others.
In that moment, I felt a real sense of gratitude. Not simply because I had been given beautiful fresh lettuce, but because of everything that gift represented. It spoke of time spent together, of nurturing something from seed to harvest, and of thinking of someone else. As I prepared meals using those fresh leaves, I knew they would, in turn, be shared with people I love. One simple act of generosity had travelled much further than a box of lettuce.
Perhaps that is the true gift of giving. Kindness has a wonderful way of multiplying.
So this week, I'd love to encourage you to give something from the heart.
Nothing extravagant.
A smile.
A phone call.
A handwritten note.
A listening ear.
An unexpected act of kindness.
Or perhaps even a box full of home-grown lettuce.
And if you happen to be the one receiving such a gift, don't brush it aside. Accept it with gratitude, smile, and when the opportunity arises, pass that kindness on to someone else.
Sometimes the smallest gifts leave the biggest impression, reminding us that generosity isn't measured by its cost, but by the love and thought behind it.
