Repetitive Patterns: The Power to Shift

Repetitive Patterns: The Power to Shift

From the moment we are born, our lives begin to take shape around repetitive patterns—nap times, feed times, and sleep routines. As we grow, these patterns evolve. School days bring their own rhythm: breakfast, lessons, lunch, homework, bedtime. Life moves forward, and though the specifics change, the repetition often remains.

Whatever repetitive pattern you currently find yourself in, it’s important to remember that as adults, we hold the power to question and reshape them. We can begin to ask ourselves deeper questions: What does success look like for me? Where would I like to live? How do I want to spend my days?

Of course, it's never as simple as "you can be whatever you want to be." External factors—family, finances, responsibilities—often shape what's possible at any given moment. But keeping an open mind and having honest conversations with yourself is a powerful start.

Instead of falling into the familiar loop—coming home from work, eating dinner, flopping in front of the TV—why not try something different? Take up that hobby you've always wanted to explore. Pick up a book that genuinely interests you. Then talk about it. Focus your attention on the one small positive change you made that day.

In summer, I love taking my shoes off and walking barefoot on sand, soil, or the sea. I hold onto those barefoot moments in my mind. When I'm stuck at my desk, rain hammering on the window, I recall the warmth of the sand, the softness of the grass, or the way the sunlight danced around me. Those memories ground me, even when I can't physically be in that place, and the thought lifts my spirits.

We can also find ourselves caught in negative repetitive patterns—assuming someone’s being unkind or dismissive when, in reality, they might just be having a tough day. Sometimes, it’s not about us at all. With a slight shift in how we interpret these moments, we can dramatically change how we feel and how we read a situation.

Breaking free from ingrained patterns—especially negative ones—doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time, self-awareness, and dedication. But by gently challenging the routines that no longer serve us, we create space to grow, evolve, move forward, and become a better version of ourselves.

Even the smallest change, repeated over time, can lead to something extraordinary.
