Many years ago, I was told a story about balance that has stayed with me ever since. It’s a simple visual, but it’s served as a powerful guide in helping me keep my life in equilibrium, especially during times when everything feels overwhelming.
Imagine your life is represented by a glass jar.
First, place three clear, tennis ball-sized spheres into the jar. These represent the three things that matter most to you. It’s different for everyone, but for me, those three are Family, Health, and Home. These are my non-negotiables—my core values. Knowing what your own three are is the first and most important step.
Next, pour in some small stones. These represent life’s responsibilities—the things we have to do: work, paying bills, looking after children or parents, daily chores. They’re not always exciting, but they are essential.
Then, slowly pour in fine sand. This is the stuff we choose to do—the activities that enrich our lives and bring us joy: spending quality time with loved ones, painting, writing, cooking, gardening, playing sport. These fill the spaces between the responsibilities and give life texture.
At this point, you may think the jar is full—but there’s always room for a little more. Gently pour in a splash of wine (or water, if you prefer). This final touch reminds us to play, to laugh, to relax, to release our inner child every now and then. Because fun matters too. It keeps our spirits light and our hearts full.
Whenever I feel overwhelmed or off-kilter, I return to this image. I take a moment to ask myself: Which part of my jar is too full? Which part is running low? It’s a gentle, visual reminder that balance isn’t about perfection—it’s about awareness, and being willing to adjust and tweak when things feel out of sync.
Life flows more easily when we feel in balance. And for me, this little story has always helped me find my way back to centre.
