A Little Less Christmas Chaos

A Little Less Christmas Chaos

This has taken me years to work out. Instead of adding more and more to the list, I stop and ask myself what’s really needed — and what’s just adding stress.

I try to say yes to the events I’m genuinely looking forward to, and to make plans I’ll enjoy. Of course, there are always obligations that don’t fit neatly into that rule. But using it as a guide helps make the festivities feel more manageable, rather than like one long string of things I have to get through.

I’ve also let go of perfection. Each child and grandchild has a Santa sack, which means there’s no wrapping paper, sticky tape or sparkly bows involved. I wrap one present, tuck a few thoughtful gifts into the sack, and that’s the job done. It saves a surprising amount of time — and I no longer find myself wrestling with tape that sticks to everything except the present.

Christmas cards have been streamlined too. I don’t send cards to people I see often; we’ll catch up in person. For the friends and family I don’t get to see, I take time to write a card and ask how they are. I may send fewer cards, but I hope each one feels a little more personal.

Then there’s the food. I love cooking over Christmas, but preparation makes all the difference. When I have time, I batch-cook a few dishes and pop them in the freezer. That way, if an unexpected guest turns up, I can pull something out and make them welcome without needing to start from scratch.

None of this makes Christmas perfectly calm — I’m not sure that’s possible — but it helps me keep more of the parts I enjoy and let go of some of the pressure.

Before you go…

How do you make the festive season feel a little more manageable? Have you found any go-to ways to keep the joy and ease some of the chaos? I’d love to hear your thoughts. welcome@tenacious-wellness.com
